Myth of Orion
As complied by: F.R. Sarker

According to Hindu mythology in Bangladesh, Lord Prajapati is the constellation Orion.  Lord Pajapati was the first supreme god who created the universe and all living organisms.  He helped humankind emerge from the darkness beneath the sea and placed them to live on the surface of the earth.  He ruled the universe for a long time but for some unknown reasons his power started to diminish. Eventually Lord Brahma ousted Lord Prajapati from his power and exalted position, and he became the supreme god.

In the early part of his reign, Lord Prajapati was a very noble, compassionate  and honest god, and he was respected and worshipped by all of his subjects, particularly for his unquestionable purity of moral character.

As time went by, Lord Prajapati’s mind started to fill with sinful motives, and he began to engage in immoral and incestuous acts. His morals had dropped so low that one day he lusted after his own daughter, Usha. Usha was a clever girl and she understood the bad motives of her father. She quickly transformed herself into a doe and ran into the forest to avoid the danger. Prajapati found out that Usha had fled into the forest, so he transformed himself into a stag and entered the forest to chase her. After a few days, Prajapati recognized Usha as a doe hiding deep in the forest, and he planned to seduce her.

In the meantime, the gods and goddesses in Heaven noticed Prajapati’s immoral and sinful behavior, and they were very angry and furious at him. They immediately summoned Rudra to punish Prajapati.  Rudra was an extremely powerful deity as well as a skillful archer with an exceptional ability to accurately target and kill prey with his arrows. Acting on orders from the gods and goddesses in Heaven, Rudra came down to Earth and rushed into that forest where Usha was hiding.  He also located Prajapati, who was planning to satiate his incestuous desires.  Rudra targeted Prajapati and shot arrows from his bow that pierced Prajapati’s abdominal area. The arrows penetrated that three points of Prajapati’s abdomen formed three bright stars named Agni, the god of the Sun (Alnitak), Soma, the god of Ambrosia (Alnilam) and Vishnu, the god of Fire (Mintaka).

These three stars can still be seen blazing prominently in the middle of the constellation Orion, lying next to each other in the same line.

One version of the myth says that Rudhra shot arrows to Prajapati standing on   Lubdhok (Sirius), the brightest star of constellation Canis Major. The pierced abdomen of   Prajapati (Orion) ended up as Rohini (Aldebaran), the brightest star in the constellation Taurus.  One interesting note here is that Sirius lies to the west side, and Aldebaran lies to the east side of Orion, but, the distances of Sirius and Aldebaran are equal from the middle of Orion.

Rahu and Ketu
As complied by: F.R. Sarker and Ramsey Lundock

Hindu mythology in Bangladesh claims that solar and lunar eclipses happen because a demon named Rahu swallows the Moon or Sun.

Rahu was a very brave and intelligent demon, and he used to travel to Patalpuri, a place below the surface of the Earth where the supreme gods stored Amrita, a potion of immortality.  One time Rahu dived into Patalpuri and discovered the storde Amrita. He secretly drank a little of the Amrita, but the Moon and Sun saw him drink it. They complained about Ruha’s sinful behavior to the supreme god, Lord Vishnu, who was furious to hear about Rahu’s treachery.

Lord Vishnu severed Rahu’s neck with a sharp sword and separated his head from the rest of his body.  As punishment for Rahu’s offense, he threw the pieces of his body into the sky, to remain the forever. The head portion is known as Rahu, and the rest of the body is called Ketu. These pieces now orbit around the Earth, 180 degrees apart.

Eclipses only occur when the orbits of the Sun and Moon cross in the sky.  The two points where they cross are known as the ascending node and the descending node.  In Bangladesh, the people believed that Rahu was at the ascending node and Ketu was at the descending node.  When the Sun or Moon passed through one of the nodes, Rahu or Ketu would swallow it for a little while and cause an eclipse.  Even though Rahu and Ketu are invisible in the sky, ancient Hindu astronomers believed that they were Grahas (planets) and tracked their motion with star charts.  The Hindu community in Bangladesh still worships Rahu and Ketu to destroy the ominous effects of solar and lunar eclipses.

Curse of Saturn
As compiled by:  F.R. Sarker

Legend says that the planet Saturn was born to be second wife of the Sun, so his step-brothers broke his leg while he was a child and crippled him.

One time, the nine planets approached King Vikramaditya of Ujjayan to select who was the best among them.  The king arranged a contest to sit on the golden and iron chairs. Since the planet Saturn was lame, he came in last. Saturn was very shocked. He expressed his objections to the king but the king dismissed them. Saturn was insulted and cursed the king so that he would suffer.

One day, a person came to the king to sell a beautiful horse. The king sat on its saddle.  Suddenly, the horse flew up into the sky and dropped the king inside of a forest. The king found the house of a rich merchant in the forest, and the merchant allowed the king to stay there.

The next morning, the merchant noticed that his necklace had been stolen. He called the Kotwal  (police) who suspected that the stranger had stolen the necklace.  As punishment for the theft, the Kotwal cut off the hands and legs of KingVikramaditya and drove him out of the house.

Then an oil crusher gave the king a job of tracking the movement of the bulls. The king used to sing pathetic songs to forget about his sufferings.  One night he had a dream in which Saturn told him that he had to suffer because he had insulted him. The king begged Saturn to forgive him so that he could get rid of his suffering.

The next morning, the king found that all of his cut-off hands and legs were restored to his body. The merchant's necklace was found, and the king returned to Ujjayan safely.

Jinn
As compiled by:  F.R. Sarker

Most of the Muslims in rural areas of Bangladesh strongly believe that humans and jinns are the two intelligent creatures who have been sent to Earth to worship God. Only these two types of creatures will be judged after their deaths.  Those who have done good deeds will be sent to Heaven and those who have done bad deeds will be sent to Hell.

They believe that jinns are invisible creatures that ordinary eyes cannot see. However, jinns can see everything with their eyes and offer help or bring danger to human beings. They live in the sky, in the forest, in the hills and everywhere between Earth and Heaven. They can change into any kind of animal including serpents, reptiles or beautiful women and tall men dressed in white.

Sometimes ordinary eyes can see jinns when they move as streaks of flashing light in the night sky. Although, astronomers call them meteors, rural people of Bangladesh believe that those moving lights in the sky are really the jinns. When they travel in the sky during the night, they shine a bright beam of light to identify the paths for reaching their destinations.

The rural people believe that the harmful influence of the jinns causes mental disorders, particularly those of women. There are a lot of quacks in the countryside of Bangladesh who treat these disorders. Their treatments include loud chanting of verses, slapping the faces of the patients with their hands, striking them with bamboo sticks, or forcing the patients to inhale certain types of incense to drive the jinn’s influence out of their bodies.

Orthodox Muslims strongly believe that the jinns were created from fire. In 1998, Sultan Bashiruddin Mahmood, a Pakistani nuclear scientist, said that because jinns are made from fire, carefully drawing on them world solve the world’s energy crisis forever.
